Lower Wharfe and Calder this weekend

Tomorrows practice session on the Calder is still going to take place but we will make a call on river level once we can get there. Levels are falling so it should be ok – I will take a look at it tomorrow morning and post an update here on the site and Facebook.

The Wharfe is also planned to still be run but again, we will keep an eye on the levels throughout tomorrow and update accordingly. If levels are too high, which is looking unlikely, we will look to paddle another river e.g the Ure.

Please let me know (tonythompson@pobox.com) if you plan to come on either day so we can ensure any changes are communicated and sufficient safety is in place.

Cheers

Tony

Upcoming club activities

A number of club activities are planned over the coming weeks:

Please note this Sat 17th Nov will be the last Pugneys session for this year.

A number of club members are planning to run the Calder from Healey to Pugneys instead of paddling around the lake this Saturday. If you wish to paddle the river, please ensure you meet at Pugneys as close to 12 o’clock as possible so we can arrange a shuttle and quickly be off. Note that this will be run at a fast pace due to the need to be off the water at Pugneys by 3.30pm. The paddle is a number of miles long with many flat stretches and is therefore unlikely to be suitable for some. The run is also subject to water levels being safe.

Next Saturday (24th), a white water practice session is planned on the Calder at Healey and is a good opportunity to get some moving water practice and learn new skills – see the calendar on the club website for further details.

On Sun 25th Nov, there will be a paddle of the Lower Wharfe, again see the website for info. Depending on river levels, this is a beginner/intermediate trip.

On Sun 2nd Dec an advanced trip is planned to the Upper Tees.

Additional scheduled trips over the coming months will shortly be added to the calendar.

For more info on the above, check out the website, club calendar and Facebook page.

Pugneys last session of the year this Saturday 17th / River Calder practice Sat 24th Nov

A quick note to say that the last Pugneys session of the year will be this coming Saturday (17th Nov) – start time of 12:30.

There is also a river run from Healey to Pugneys on Sat 17th Nov at 12:00, meet at Pugneys, for those who would prefer that to a lake paddle.

Saturday 24th Nov (next week), we are planning to go to the River Calder at Healey for a white water practice session – 12:30.

Hopefully we’ll see some of you there 🙂

Tees Race Sunday 11th November

The club is running the national white water race on the River Tees on Sunday 11th November. Volunteers are required to provide safety for the Classic race and depending upon water levels for the sprint event on Abbey Rapids.

Itinerary for the day will be as follows

8:30 meet at Scotch Corner for butty
10:00 on water at Egglestone Bridge
Provide safety at key rapids for approx 45 min (both in boats and on bank- it will be cold so being plenty of warm drinks etc)

Afternoon safety at Abbey rapids

Water levels over the past few years have been unpredictable and vary from a bit of a scrape to mid river stoppers that held the raft. (Ask Smithy if you do not believe me)

Can any volunteers happy on performing rescues on grade 3+ water let Steve Thorley-Lawson know that they are coming (sthorleyla@aol.com) or usual mob number.

Thanks

Steve

Club membership now due

Please note that club membership fees are now due for the next year (2012/2013). Club membership entitles you to attend river trips, club holidays, lower fees for pool and Pugneys sessions and free parking at Pugneys as well as the opportunity to vote at the AGM in November to help influence the direction of your club.

2012/2013 Membership fees for the club are as follows:

£25 family
£15 individual

Membership fees should be paid as soon as possible. Cheques should be made payable to West Yorkshire Canoe Club.

Please ensure you fill in a new membership form with the payment (see below).

BECOMING A CLUB MEMBER

Membership of WYCC is open to anyone who wishes to enjoy canoeing/kayaking in a relaxed atmosphere.

All WYCC members recognise that Canoeing and Kayaking are ‘Assumed risk’ ‘water contact sports’ that may carry attendant risks. All WYCC members should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own action and involvement.

To become a club member requires you to have attended the regularly held pool or Pugneys sessions 3 times (see ‘Where to find us?‘ for further details).

West Tanfield Slalom still taking place

West Tanfield slalom is taking place. Currently the water condition will prove challenging to Div 4 paddlers but the expectations are that the water levels will continue to drop, but it remains unpredictable how far.
The event is now full and we will not be taking entries on the weekend with the exception of recently promoted paddlers
