Sowerby Bridge, Fri 2nd Aug

Apologies for the short notice but Andy Walker is planning a paddle tomorrow (Fri 2nd Aug), at Sowerby Bridge.

Please let Andy know if you fancy a paddle.

Meet up time is 18:00 – 18:30 ish at the market car park in Sowerby. Please let him know ASAP by text/mobile 07748 111819 or Facebook if you plan to go.

Washburn release, 24th July, 4:30pm

Members of WYCC will be attending the Washburn release on 24th July, starting at 4:30pm with the water running until 8:30pm.

If you fancy coming along and are a confident paddler, you are most welcome to join us.

Hopefully we’ll see some of you there.

Summer evening cool down – Pugneys, Fri 19th July, 18:30

There’s very little water in the rivers at the moment and the weather is forecast to be hot all next week too, so the rivers are going to be even lower unfortunately.

Rather than cancel a paddling opportunity, we thought it might be a good idea to have an evening session on Pugneys to cool down instead after work/school. This will be followed by a trip across the road to the pub for those who fancy it, to relax and cool down even further.

Meet up time is 18:30 at Pugneys car park – if you’re late, don’t worry as you’ll be able to spot us whizzing around in our playboats and what not.

Worth noting too that you don’t need a parking permit after 18:00 as it’s free to park. However, we will have to pay the usual Pugneys fee as the club in turn has to pay Pugneys for the number on paddlers on the lake.

Hopefully we’ll see some of you there…

Cheers,

Tony.

Rescue and Rope skills, Fri 26th July

Following the success of last years session Steve Thorley-Lawson will be running the session again this year. The session will be based on dry land at Thornes park.

The aim is to improve your rope skills and will include throwline techniques, knot tying, recover lines and the use of pulleys.

Please bring along any kit you have bought, throwlines, carabiners etc, even if you are not sure how to use.

The only prerequisite is that you can tie your own shoe laces.

Meet up time is 6:30pm in the car park at Thornes Park Athletic track.

Please let Steve Thorley-Lawson (sthorleyla@aol.com or 07857 378137) know if you intend coming along so we can make sure we have enough kit.

Summer Evening Club Cruise, Healey to Navigation – Fri 12th July, 18:30

The first summer evening club cruise will be held on Friday 12th July at 6:30pm, on the River Calder.

Meeting at the start at Healey WF5 8NE and paddling down to the Navigation at Bombardier at Horbury Junction Industrial Estate WF4 5ER.

Bring money as we will end up in the beer garden of the Navigation pub or elsewhere 🙂

This is a good, easy river for people who fancy trying moving water and ideal for practicing skills such as ferry gliding.

First Friday evening paddle of the Summer – Sowerby Bridge, Fri 5th July, 18:30+

Batley Baths pool sessions have now finished for the Summer so over the the next two months, we plan to run regular paddle sessions on local rivers. Many of these paddles are suitable for the newer paddlers and are a good intro to moving water.

The first of these is at Sowerby Bridge on Friday 5th July, meet at 18:30 onwards. If you arrive late, no worries as we won’t have gone far.

For Sowerby Bridge, you need to have had some experience of paddling on moving water – it is a grade 2 section of river with some grade 3 rapids that we spend our time playing on, all in the space of a few 100m. It is also a good opportunity to come see what the fuss is about (and watch us practicing our rolls 🙂 ) if you don’t fancy taking part.

Directions to the car park are as follows:-

Approaching Sowerby Bridge from the Halifax side, drop down through Sowerby Bridge, cross over the bridge spanning the river and take an immediate right before you go under the railway bridge and before the pedestrian crossing. The car park is at the side of the river, approx 25m from the main road.

Hopefully see some of you there.

PS Bring money as we tend to visit the pub afterwards 🙂

River Calder – Mytholmroyd to Sowerby Bridge paddle, Sun 30th June, 2pm

A group of club members are running the River Calder from “Mytholmroyd” to Sowerby Bridge this Sunday. Members from the club are more than welcome to come along – the paddle is easy and mostly flat with a few slidey weirs, suitable for newer paddlers. You will need your own gear or borrow and transport kit from the club prior to Sunday however, as we have no way to transport additional equipment. You can collect equipment from Pugneys on Saturday afternoon if required.

The weather is forecast to be warm (20’c) and partly sunny – if you aren’t planning to do anything on Sunday afternoon then why not come along and enjoy a relaxing paddle down the river? 🙂
If you plan to come along, please let me know ahead of time.
The meet up time is 2pm and the meet up point is here. For sat nav, HX6 2LN will get you very near to the car park.
Once we arrive at Sowerby, there’ll be plenty of time to play on the rapids.
Cheers
Tony
