Pugney’s

The club were looking to begin the Saturday sessions at Pugney’s shortly but due to unforeseen circumstance, Pugney’s have not confirmed the clubs terms and condition for the 2017 paddling season.

Pugney’s hope to have things in place to paddle as a club by Friday 28th April. Hopefully we will back paddling the first weekend in May. Apologies for any inconvenience.

We will look to run a river session for anyone interested  maybe Saturday 29th April if there is sufficient interest.

Saturday 08th April Sowerby Bridge

This Saturday we are looking at going to Sowerby Bridge for a couple of hours, general kayaking and slalom practise for anyone who wants to have a try.

Plan is to meet at 12 midday in the car park on the industrial estate just over the river here:  HX6 1AW.

The river here is very safe at current levels and great for beginners as there are several sections of small weirs with large pools after them.

If you would like to join us please email HERE before 9pm Friday.

Slalom Information

So slalom season is just about upon us so see below for information and details of upcoming events.

Firstly if you are looking to compete in any races this year and are wanting to accumulate points you should have already registered and requested a bib, this will be your number for the year unless you are promoted  during the season. To apply for a bib you have to send off to the bib officer for your division. You should also be a current member of British  Canoeing.

Hopefully there will be another training session in the next couple of weeks at Matlock – details to follow.

Upcoming events:

March 11/12th – Stone Div 3/4 ST15 0EX                                                             March 25/26th – Matlock Div 2 DE4 3PT                                                               April 1/2nd – Oughtibridge Div 3/4 S35 0GG                                                       April 15/16th – Tynedale, Hexham Div 2/3/open NE48 3NP

You can also enter any slalom that is not for your division as an official but you will not receive any points towards your years score.

Most of the events have a limited number of entries available and so places should be booked in advance, this will also avoid late entry fees. Most of the events require you to complete a blue entry card and post off along with a cheque to the relevant organiser.

I will most likely be at most of the events and so can send off a group booking for anyone who is looking to compete.

Please let me know if you intend to compete at any of the events or would like to attend any training sessions, also if you require boats or equipment so we can organise these in advance.

AGM

We have set a date for the 2016 AGM, yes we are now in 2017 but due to various commitments it was not possible to hold the AGM at the end of the year. The date is Wednesday 1st February at 7.30pm and will be held at Ossett Cricket Club. As always we will supply supper in the form of pie & peas. The AGM is open to any club members and while there is a serious aspect to the meeting it is also a bit of a social evening as well.

There are several committee roles up for renewal this year and all members have been emailed with a list of positions that will be available.

Any member who wishes to stand for a position must apply by email to: club.secretary@westyorkshirecanoeclub.com at least 21 days before the AGM, all nominations must be proposed and seconded by a club members.

Any member who wishes to propose a motion for discussion at the AGM must forward the motion to: club.secretary@westyorkshirecanoeclub.com – any motion must be signed by 3 club members to be valid.

2017

Good evening All, We hope you all had a great Christmas and Santa brought you lots of kayaking type presents.

Looking forward into 2017 we should have details of our AGM shortly – we have several vacancies on the committee coming up so we will be looking for some new faces to join us, all vacant roles will be published shortly along with details about nominating people etc.

This week will see both Pontefract and Batley baths sessions back to normal – please try to come along to one of the sessions and get some practice in the warmth of the pool.

We will also resume the Saturday white water training sessions on the Calder to get some of our newer members up to speed on the rivers. We will look to start the sessions on January 7th around 11.30/12pm for the next  few weeks, anyone who requires to borrow boats or kit please get in touch by latest 7pm the Friday before: andy@westyorkshirecanoeclub.com

We are also looking to  promote slalom during 2017 – for anyone who is not sure what this is it is racing down a river in a kayak, weaving in and out of poles suspended above the water, the object being to get through the course as fast as possible without touching any of the  poles as points are deducted for this.

There are many slalom events throughout the year for ALL abilities, these start with a very basic event on a lake through to Premiere division where the events are held on fast rivers and also man made courses such as Lee Valley – this is where the 2012 Olympic kayaking was held. All events are held over weekends at various locations around the country and most are also a bit of a social event as well where parents etc. can get involved with judging and generally helping out during the event.

All persons taking part in the events are ranked after the race and there are many medals and trophies handed out at each event.

Once you start attending the events there are also regional training sessions that run throughout the year at various locations and we will be attending some of these, as you progress you will be expected to attend several of the training sessions – most of the sessions are based on the water but there are also a couple of dry training sessions throughout the year where you are shown both the mental and physical aspects of slalom training.

Slalom is open to both adults and children. Anyone interested in getting into slalom please let me know so I can begin to get things organised: andy@westyorkshirecanoeclub.com

We will look to organise some river trips during the next few months – if anyone has any suggestions or favourites please let us know and we will try to organise: club.secretary@westyorkshirecanoeclub.com

And finally if members have any ideas or suggestions for the club or events etc. please do not hesitate to get in touch with us – it is your club so please shout out and get involved.

PLEASE NOTE TRIPS AND TRAINING SESSIONS ARE ONLY OPEN TO CLUB MEMBERS.

Weekend 19/20th November

Hi All,
Just a quick note about this weekends activities:
Saturday 19th we be running whitewater training on the River Calder near Ossett, this session is suitable for most paddlers from beginner upwards. We will concentrate on a short section of the river and will aim to improve basic river paddling skills.
The plan is to meet here: WF5 8NE at 12.30pm.
Anyone wanting to participate MUST contact Andy by Friday evening at the latest here: andy@westyorkshirecanoeclub.com
Please leave contact email address and mobile number in case of any changes. Anyone who needs to borrow boats or kit please specify exactly what you require and we will try to organise.
On Sunday 20th November Mark will run a trip on the River Lune (Lowgill to Killington Bridge). Meet at the Butty Bar, Devils Bridge, Kirby Lonsdale at 9.00am. This is an intermediate trip, where you need to be able to paddle/position your kayak on some harder grade 2/3 sections. The harder sections, such as the strid, can be walked around.
Hope fully we will have a little more success with water levels this time, but will keep our options open and review a little closer to the River Trip.
Note, club coaches may not be present on the river trip but we will ensure there are sufficient competent paddlers for safety.
Please can you let me know by Friday 18th November, if your going with contact details or if you need any further info.
Tel/text: 07976 598804

PLEASE NOTE ALL RIVER TRIPS ARE ONLY OPEN TO PAID UP CLUB MEMBERS AND PARTICIPATION IS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE ORGANISER.
