Saturday 8th May

Events for this weekend have been added to the calendar.

This week we are running morning sessions on the river and afternoon sessions on Pugney’s. We will run tasters sessions at both locations.

There has been some rain over the weekend and a little more forecast during the week, hopefully the river will still be at a manageable level for the morning session however if it does rise too much we may have to cancel the session and move to the afternoon session at Pugney’s or the following week.

We are now allowed to run sessions up to 15 people in total including coaches and participants (in line with guidance from British Canoeing).

Morning river session:

10.00 – 12.00pm

10.00 – 12.00pm Taster session

Afternoon Pugney’s session:

1.00 – 3.00pm

1.00 – 3.00pm Taster session

If the sessions become full we will add a further sessions. If anyone is feeling brave the river is quite low and slow flowing so would be suitable for paddle boarding if any members have a board and want to give it a try on the river.

The café at the river is open now until 9 – 1pm so if you want a sandwich you can grab a butty before getting on the water.

The cost for borrowing equipment is £10.00 per person for any session and tasters sessions are £15 per person.

Anyone who has not paddled with the club before MUST complete a taster session before joining regular sessions, this allows us to assess any new members and run over club safety procedure’s etc. Taster sessions can also be booked on the website .

PLEASE can all participants bear in mind there is still a high risk of Covid infection and while we are allowed a larger number of people on the water social distancing must remain in place off the water. Please ensure when coming along to sessions you do not socialise with other members while sorting out kit etc. and once you have picked up your kit move away from the trailer area and sort out your kit with your family members or bubble.

Saturday 17th April

Events for this weekend have been added to the calendar.

This week we are running all sessions on the river in the morning and afternoon. This is due to the car parking situation at Pugneys, hopefully this will be resolved in the next few weeks.

All paddlers who were booked onto last weeks sessions that were cancelled have already been added to this weeks sessions so no need to rebook – if you are booked on and can’t make it this week please let us know by email or Facebook message.

Saturday 3rd April

At last we can get back onto the water as the lockdown is eased.

Events for this weekend have been added to the calendar. This week we are looking at running sessions on the river in the morning and Pugneys in the afternoon.

We are now allowed to run sessions up to 15 people in total including coaches and participants (in line with guidance from British Canoeing).

Morning river sessions:

Session one: 10.00 – 12.00pm

If the first session becomes full we will add a second morning session. If anyone is feeling brave the river is quite low and slow flowing so would be suitable for paddle boarding if any members have a board and want to give it a try on the river.

The café at the river is not open yet but the owner will be on site and if we pre order sandwiches or drinks they will prepare these for delivery before the session, we have not managed to sort out online ordering yet but if you would like a sandwich or drink please make a note in the booking form of what you would like and then we can order for payment on Saturday.

Afternoon Pugneys session:

Session two: 1.00 – 3.00pm

Changing rooms within the main building are not presently available, so please arrive at the session prepared as best as possible and be prepared to change at your car / outside. For current up-to-date information about current amenities at Pugneys, see the page below:
https://www.wakefield.gov.uk/sport-health-and-leisure/leisure-centres-and-facilities/pugneys-country-park                                                      It is NOT possible to change in our container or leave any belongings inside. Also please remember anyone – paddlers or spectators are NOT allowed past the wooden fence without a buoyancy aid – sorry there are no exceptions to this rule.

We are still waiting for details regarding the car park at Pugneys. Beginning April the car park will be free for the first 2 hours and then payment will be required but this system will not really work for paddlers who are on the water so hopefully we will have an update regarding this shortly.

Depending on the wishes of the group and the weather, we can either paddle around the lake or stay in the sheltered area.

The cost for borrowing equipment is £10.00 per person for any session, we have had to increase the costs as we spent a large amount of club funds on new equipment and refurbishing the trailer. Even with the increased costs we still offer one of the lowest sessions costs in the area.

Anyone who has not paddled with the club before MUST complete a taster session before joining regular sessions, this allows us to assess any new members and run over club safety procedure’s etc. Taster sessions can be booked either on the river or Pugneys session.

Update

Good evening all, unfortunately 2021 has not got off to a great start for the club. We are however hoping that once we get into spring we will be able to get out on the water again.

We have just sent an email out to all members about our proposed summer camping trip to Devon, this has been an annual trip for the last few years and allows members to experience sea kayaking and surfing as well as just generally having a few days away to have a bit of fun – if you haven’t received an email please drop a message to: club secretary or send a message on Facebook so we can add you to the mailing list.

Just a quick reminder that membership fees are due shortly – renewal can be completed and paid for all online on our website. As a club we have to pay fees for all our members in March to British Canoeing  for Waterways licences as well as insurance so it is important that all members are paid up prior to this.

We are looking to hold a virtual AGM via Zoom in the next couple of months and will be available to all club members, normally the AGM is in November but due to the extraordinary events of 2020 we decided to postpone until early this year. There will be some positions available on the committee and we would welcome any of our members to to join us, full details will be posted once a date has been set.

On behalf of the Committee we would like to thank all of our members for their support during these difficult times and fingers crossed we can get back to some kind of normal in the coming months.

Happy New Year

Good evening members, as we kick 2020 well and truly into touch we can only hope for a happy and safer 2021.

On behalf of the committee, we would like to Thank each and every one of you for your continued support during a very challenging 2020.

As a sporting club we were allowed to continue offering sporting sessions in accordance with our governing body British Canoeing however our home waters Pugneys lake was closed by the council as soon as lockdown was announced as well as Batley pool.
This gave us as a club a massive logistical issue as all our boats and gear were stored at Pugneys and would require transporting to a different venue if we could find one.
Luckily after some hunting around we found a usable spot on the River Calder at Horbury Junction, a nice clean stretch of river with a wide still section and a small beach as well as a weir and a few rapids just upstream, as an added bonus there is a large accessible car park a few metres from the river and we were given permission by the owner of the on site café to use the car park – a fantastic result as you could grab a great butty before getting on the water.

We ran a couple of sessions here and we then had a sudden influx of enquiries from people wanting to get involved with the club, after a few weeks we were running several sessions each Saturday (all socially distanced as required by British Canoeing and the Government), memberships soared and we had paddlers aged 5 – 80 participating in the sessions.

Although the sessions were enjoyed by all there was a lot of work behind the scenes in order for us as a club to deliver the sessions in a safe and controlled manor: Risk assessments, Covid forms, Track and Trace etc. not to mention loading the boats and transporting etc.  We also had to quickly put in place an on line booking and membership system in order to eliminate having to handle cash and forms etc. at the sessions.

Late in the season we were eventually allowed back onto Pugneys, this allowed us to run even more sessions rather than turn members away and we kept running sessions almost until Christmas which again is a first for us as we normally stop running sessions around the end of October.
We plan to kick off sessions again in the next couple of weeks and hope to see all of our members back out on the water again throughout the coming year. We have some ideas about improving access etc. and would really appreciate help from members as well as parents etc.

During the year we have made investments including full refurbishment of the trailer which now allows us to transport up to 12 boats and all equipment safely to any venue in the area, we have also invested in some new equipment including helmets and we will continue into 2021.

2021 membership is due before 31st January 2021 and we hope you will all renew and enjoy the benefits of the club for another year. All current members should have received an email about renewal giving details of the preferred method of renewal – on line all of which can be done securely on our website:https://membermojo.co.uk/westyorkshirecanoeclub/renew

Normally we would have the AGM in November but due to the exceptional circumstances in 2020 we have postponed this and we are planning to run an on line AGM around the end of March – all members will be eligible to join the meeting and participate, we welcome any suggestions from our members and will be looking to fill some vacant positions on the current committee. Full details will follow in the coming weeks.

Of course, none of the above would be possible without our precious volunteers who give up their own time in order to run the committee and sessions etc. – massive Thank You to all of you out there for your continued support.

And once again a big Thank You to all our members and we hope to see you all again during 2021.
