River Season

As winter approaches we are now closing Pugneys sessions and will begin river trips and river training.

This coming Saturday 9th November we are planning a river trip hopefully on the River Ure near Ripon. The trip should be OK for any club members who are confident paddling in a kayak and using a spray deck subject to water levels on the day.

We may be able to transport a limited number of boats if members are wanting to borrow kit but we need to know in advance if anyone requires boats or kit – we need to know latest Thursday.

If you are interested in paddling with us please get in touch via Facebook or drop a mail to club secretary

Any updates will be posted on Facebook as the location or river can be changed at the last minute.

On Saturday’s when we haven’t organised a trip we will look to offer river training for any club members who want to improve their skills on whitewater. The training will mainly be on the River Calder near Ossett but could also be at the Whitewater course at Sowerby Bridge.

Details will be posted on Facebook during the week before the session – please send a message if you would be interested in attending, again we can organise for members to borrow boats and kit but we do require some notice.

Please note any trips or training are only open to full club members. The decision of who can paddle will be made by the organisers on the day.

Pugneys

We will be back at Pugneys today 14th September.

Please come along today and have a paddle in the sun.

There is dragon boat racing on also today so the site will be busy with lots of people moving around. On the lake we will have to keep away from the races but also should give us a great view to watch the races.

Hopefully we will see lots of you later today – we will be there from around 12pm.

WASHBURN – CONFIRMED

Its that time of the year again – West Yorkshire Canoe Club’s annual Washburn event is fast approaching.

This is a chance for members to paddle one of Yorkshires best whitewater river runs. This is a dam release so the water level is guaranteed however little rain we have had.

We have now had confirmation that we have water on both the Saturday and Sunday so we can run the full weekend.

We will be organising our own catering for the second year, this year we plan to offer more hot food such as chip butties, burger and chips etc. Some members have already committed to come along and help out but if last years event is anything to go by we will require plenty of club members to come along and help out for a few hours.

The river is fast flowing grade 2/3 so not suitable for novices but any members who feel they would like to paddle please have a chat with a member of the committee to ensure suitability.

Pugneys

Good evening All, Easter weekend is here and it’s going to be a hot one. Our Pugneys summer sessions officially begin next week 27th April but as it’s going to be a great weekend we are going to run a session this Saturday 20th.
We will run the session at the normal time 12.30pm at the container and on the water for 1pm although I will be down there from around 11am if anyone wants a longer session.
Hope to see lots of you there.

Spring Update

Good evening All, as the weather looks to be looking up we have a couple of updates for you all:

We had a meeting this week at Pugney’s to discuss the 2019 season and this was very positive. Basically we can run the sessions the same as last year as Wakefield Council were happy with how we operated last year. Looking forwards it is hoped a watersports company will take over the management of the water but this will not begin until towards the end of 2019 with a view to begin in full in 2020. Wakefield Council will however put caveats on the new operators to ensure the active clubs – ourselves and the Windsurf club will still be able to operate on the water.

Wakefield Council will look to provide a new notice board for our club so we can advertise. We will also provide more flyers to be handed out at reception.

Linton Whitewater Course

For all you non Facebook types Linton Whitewater Course is almost complete. This week saw water flowing and the first test run down the course.

The course is going to be paddleable even when in normal fish p[ass mode and then once flow is increased should be great fun. In the next few weeks rapid blocks will be added and tested to generate some nice waves and playspots. Meetings will take place and a management committee will be formed to determine how the facility is run and maintained, WYCC will be one of the clubs involved in the management so this will become a great asset to the club and the region.

Linton Locks whitewater course

The Linton White Water Course is now getting very close to completion. The main inlet gate is now in place and mechanical tests should begin this week with water tests expected around February.

As you can see from the photos below the site is quite large and will feature 3 large pools. Plastic rapidblocks are to be placed inside the 2 concrete structures between the pools to form weirs and hopefully some nice surf waves.

There are plans to have permanent posts and slalom gates for slalom practice and competitions. Also hopefully the course will be floodlit.

The plan to manage the site is for several local clubs to manage the scheme together. This will consist of each club running several releases per year on a similar basis to Washburn but with the added bonus of being able to adjust the flow.

Original design concept. As you can see from below the water area has been increased.

The course should also allow for slalom competitions to take place throughout the year with on site camping and toilet facilities.

The facility will be a fantastic addition to our region and will provide almost guaranteed year round water for slalom and freestyle alike.

View from the bridge. The channels on the right are the fish passes and will be blocked off during kayaking mode. Rapid blocks will be placed inside the concrete channels.
View under the bridge down to the exit of the course.
View from the end of the course, the water is expected to be up to the top of the concrete with a nice wave at the end. The narrow channel on the left is the fish pass.
This area will become the car park and camping area for events etc.
